Demerit Points and New Drivers (G1/G2):



2 or More Demerit Points

If you are Class G1 or G2 driver, You will get a warning latter in mail.

6 Demerit Points

  • If you accumulate 6 points, you may have to go to Ministry of Transportation for an interview to discuss your record.
  • You are required to give reasons why your licence should not be suspended.
  • If you don't attend, your licence may be suspended.
If you carries 4 or more demerit points, your licesnce
  • will be suspend for 30 days - on 1st offence.
  • will be suspend for 90 days - on 2nd offence.
  • licence cancellation - on sebsequent offence.
Note1: If you are a new driver and are convicted of violating any condition or a Highway Traffic Act offence that carries 4 or more demerit points or receive a court-ordered suspension for an offence that would have resulted in 4 or more demerit points, you will receive the appropriate penalty under the Novice Driver Escalating Sanctions program. However, no demerit points will be applied to your record or be counted towards your demerit point total.

9 or More Demerit Points

  • You must surrender your licence to Ministry of Transportation if you accumulate 9 or more poits within a 2 years perios.
  • You can surrender your licence at any ServiceOntario Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, ServiceOntario College Park Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, or mail to:
    Ministry of Transportation
    Driver Improvement Office
    Building A, Main Floor
    2680 Keele Street
    Downsview, ON M3M 3E6
  • You can NOT surrender DriveTest centres for suspension purposes.
  • After your licence suspension, the number of points on your record will be reduced to 4. In case of any additional points, you are may required again to the interview level. If you reach nine points again, your licence can be suspended for 6 months from the date you surrender it to the Ministry of Transportation.
Note1: If you are a new driver and are convicted of violating any condition or a Highway Traffic Act offence that carries 4 or more demerit points or receive a court-ordered suspension for an offence that would have resulted in 4 or more demerit points, you will receive the appropriate penalty under the Novice Driver Escalating Sanctions program. Demerit Points and Fully Licenced Drivers (G):



6 Demerit Points

If you are Class G (fully licenced) driver, You will get a warning latter in mail.

9 Demerit Points

  • If you accumulate 9 points, you may have to go to Ministry of Transportation for an interview to discuss your record.
  • You are required to give reasons why your licence should not be suspended.
  • Missing interview simply means Automatic Licence Suspention.

15 Demerit Points

  • You must surrender your licence to Ministry of Transportation.
  • Your licence will be suspended for 30 days from the date you surrender.
  • You can surrender your licence at any ServiceOntario Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, ServiceOntario College Park Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office, or mail to:

    Driver Improvement Office
    Building A, Main Floor

    Downsview, ON M3M 3E6
  • You can NOT surrender DriveTest centres for suspension purposes.
  • After the suspension, you may be required to complete a Driver re-examination (knowledge, visionand or road test). If you successfully fulfil your requirements you will have your driver’s licence reinstated and the number of points on your record will be reduced to 7. Any extra points could again bring you to the interview level. If you reach 15 points again, your licence will be suspended for 6 months.
If you receive a conviction for an offence committed while a new driver that is eligible for sanctions under the Novice Driver Escalating Sanctions Program but you now hold a full class G driver's licence, you will be required to serve the following:
  • 1st occurrence - 30 day licence suspension
  • 2nd occurrence - 90 day licence suspension
  • 3rd occurrence - 90-day licence suspension


Demerit Points and Out-of-Province Convictions:


Any drivers convicted of any driving related offence in the State of Michigan, the State of New York or any Canadian province or territory, will have home jurisdictional penalties such as demerit points and/or suspensions applied to their Ontario driver record as if the offence occurred in Ontario.
